You feel like roommates.

Or worse, enemies.

You feel like a failure.

Why can’t we just figure it out and get along?

Why can’t we feel like we did when we began?

More Couples Therapy FAQs

_________

What is Emotion Focused Therapy?

Emotion focused therapy (EFT) is a scientifically-validated couples therapy treatment that reduces conflict and helps couples reconnect with each other.

How does Emotion Focused Therapy work?

EFT works by discovering the negative cycles of interaction that create conflict between people. It then initiates new patterns of interaction so that a secure, loving connection can emerge.

What is the goal of couples therapy?

The goal of couples counseling is to diminish conflict, fights, and discord. We work with you to build a relationship that feels safe, nurturing, and loving.

What will our relationship look like after couples therapy?

By the end of therapy, you should feel safe, close, and connected with your partner or spouse. Your relationship will be a source of support and comfort. When there is discord it should only last a short time, and bickering and fighting will occur much less frequently.

How do we know if your center has the right therapist for me?

There are many psychologists, counselors, and social workers. Many are skilled at individual clinical work. A few are exceptional couples therapists. All therapists at the Marin Couples Center have been specifically chosen because of their clinical talent and experience in working with couples. All of our staff has supervised or trained other therapists.

How do I know if we need couples counseling?

Sometimes a relationship is in a crisis, at a breaking point, and you know you need help. Other times you may find yourself bickering over small things, having communication problems, or just feeling disconnected from each other. Any time your relationship doesn’t feel supportive, nurturing, or satisfying is a good time to seek counseling.

The last time we tried counseling it did not work.

Not all couples counselors are the same and not all couples therapy is the same. Even though counseling has not worked for you in the past does not mean that we cannot help you. Emotion Focused Therapy is a very effective therapy — research studies have shown EFT to be effective for 84% of couples in treatment. It is the “gold standard” treatment with a clinically-validated roadmap to helping you reconnect. Moreover, all of our staff at the Marin Couples Center work closely with our clients and respond to feedback. We want you to be satisfied with our work together and the progress you are making.

Will you take sides during the counseling sessions? Will I be blamed?

As your couples therapist, it is important for us not to take sides. Both you and your partner should each feel supported and safe in our work together.

Why is therapy so expensive ?

Yes, therapy can be expensive but we want to make sure that our work together is worth it for you. It is difficult to put a price tag on having a loving mutually supportive relationship. In the end, it’s more cost effective to go to a specialist who charges more but gets results than someone cheaper and less trained. Your relationship is worth it.
